Magick is inherently intent-neutral, much like electricity or magnetism. It is regularly said that magick is neither good nor bad, black nor white. The intent and the outcome of how the magick was used determine whether it is considered good and light or bad and dark. Luck is the same way.

This information is being offered as an observation on the mechanics of luck manipulation in a ritualistic chaos magick setting. 

I. Presence and Absence

The “luck” that is traditionally though of as “good” and “bad” does not exist. Luck is neither good nor bad. There is, however, the presence of luck and the absence of luck. This is touched upon in the colloquialism “I’m feeling lucky.” It might feel like a surge of energy or drive, and is usually accompanied by feelings of infallibility and invincibility. To achieve the desired outcome, however, it becomes necessary to guide that energy with a declared intent and/or become fluent in the scrying or divination of one’s own feeling of “luck.”

The obvious starting point is accentuating the presence of Luck. The easiest way to do that is to pay attention. The next time you are presented with a choice, make a conscious effort to note how the two choices make you feel. If you can single out the part of that feeling that is not fact-based, that is preferable. Choices made are strongly influenced by desirability. If you haven’t eaten anything today, the protein would probably make you feel better than the sugar. That’s logical. But there may be a part of you that really wants that donut.

In one scenario, you grab some peanuts to gnaw on while you cook. In another scenario, you grab the piece of chocolate. Pick one. Note the outcome. For the sake of discussion, let’s say you ate the peanuts and you felt relief from the hunger and suddenly felt energized. Or maybe they were too salty. Maybe they were too spicy. Maybe there was something off about them. Whatever happens, take note. Maybe you were drawn to the candy but picked the peanuts. Maybe you didn’t think anything of the candy and were excited about the peanuts. A good or bad outcome occurred relative to how you acted on your interpretation of your feelings. 

You should create your own method, but this outline will give you an idea as to what information you are seeking and how you can work it into the desired result.

The next time you repeat this exercise, it will look a little differently because you will be incorporating the results into the first exercise.

  10. Analyze: Incorporate how you felt about the outcome previous exercise. Did you trust your gut previously? How did that turn out?
  11. Make decision. Note whether UR or LR was chosen. 
  12. Reflect: was the outcome from your choice good or bad?

Identifying and Working with a Baseline

The goal in these exercises is to accentuate Luck by identifying it, acknowledging it, and cultivating it. Luck cannot be accessed directly, but it seems possible for some part of your subconscious to perceive it. You perceive something, but what is it? Repetition and experience will help you define that feeling. 

Repeat Exercise #02 over and over and over. You will notice that you are either tending towards your goals, away from your goals, or you’re making no progress.

If you are moving towards your goals, then your efforts to identify a baseline by observing how your perception should be interpreted were successful. If you felt X and are having good results acting on X, continue. If you felt X and are having good results NOT acting on X, continue. You have hit on the ideal outcome for this exercise.

If you are moving away from your goals, that can be fixed. You identified an Unfiltered Reaction that we will call Feeling X. It could be desirable and warm and fuzzy, or it could be undesirable and cold and scary. It doesn’t matter if you have a good feeling about it or a bad feeling. That is Feeling X. Up until now, you have decided to trust or not-trust that feeling. Whichever you picked, do the opposite from now on when repeating Exercise #02. Look at Step 5: Choices compared against outcome of past exercise(s). If you’re presented with a choice between two options, consider the Unfiltered Reaction (UR) and the Logical Reaction (LR). Also consider your Luck Experience (LE). You should be able to look at the choices and readily identify what you would have picked in the past. Now you know – don’t pick that! You found a way to identify what NOT to pick. Recognize that. Then practice, practice, practice. You can train yourself to pick a more fortunate outcome. That said, it may always feel like you’re making the wrong choice. It only feels that way.

If you’re making no progress with creating a baseline after about a year of practice, there’s a problem. Start by making sure you aren’t rushing your decisions. If you can wait, if you can sleep on it, then wait. You need to get comfortable with the thought and feelings your brain is showing you. Your brain has it’s own vocabulary. To some, pain is bad. To others, it’s not bad at all. You have to experience feeling X, look at it, identify it, know it, and then learn through repetition whether that feeling should or shouldn’t guide your decisions. 

Observation cannot be rushed.

Do you have the patience to wait

till your mud settles and the water is clear?

Can you remain unmoving

till the right action arises by itself?

The more you pay attention to this feeling, the stronger it will get. You will also notice that this Feeling X isn’t binary on/off or good/bad. It might feel warm or cold. Or it might feel red, orange, green, and purple. Once you identify that feeling of Luck inside you, start observing how it changes in different situations and with choices presented with more than two options.  

Consistency

You will note a certain amount of consistency, or, at very least, changes come in two forms. Change can be subtle over time, or it can be abrupt and severe. You are going to change as a person over the years. That is to be expected. Things happen, big and small. The abrupt and severe changes aren’t necessarily because of a big personal event. Reiki seems to change it. Illness seems to change it. Strangely, baptism seems to change it. This is why regular exercises are important. It’s almost like a calibration. 

Documentation and Information Processing

An overabundance of information and data will soon be readily available. Initially, expect this to be overwhelming. All you can do is sit back and document at first because you don’t have any prior experience with which to compare. Good ways to document include journaling or taking video of yourself talking about it. Another valuable resource is traditional therapy. This forces you to address those feelings once a week, even when it feels pointless or unfruitful. Therapists are also excellent at drawing attention to instances when your perceptions are skewed. A good therapist won’t tell you what to think, but they will teach you how to process what you are thinking and feeling. This can be vital in all magick work having to do with perception or emotions.  

Presence

At this point, you should have an understanding of my initial statement that Luck is neither good nor bad, but that it’s either present or it’s absent. If you sense the presence, you have work ahead of you. It’s not perfect. It won’t work in every instance. But the more you use it, the stronger it will get. It will also queue up faster and work more reliably if you practice. 

II. Enough Hocus Pocus…

Everyone has a gut reaction. Is yours trustworthy? Anyone can bumble through life without trying. But if you pay attention to the patterns in nature, and “nature” includes you, there are constants. This exercise is geared towards friends and family with a magick background, but the bottom line is anyone can determine if their gut is a worthwhile measurement. Your decisions do not have to be based on your instincts and feelings. That part you can control, but the instincts do have a place. Learn what your gut is telling you. Learn to make better decisions. Good luck!
